Beasley signs rookie contract, injured in first practice

It was a day of good news and bad news for Michael Beasley with the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Beasley was picked # 2 overall in last week's NBA Draft by the Heat, and signed his rookie contract, paying him reportedly between $3.6 million and $ 4.3 million during the 2008-2009 season. Things took a turn though during Beasley's first practice as a he took an inadvertant elbow to the chest during a defensive drill 45 minutes into the workout. Beasley was taken to a doctor for observation, but Heat officials insist the visit was strictly a precautionary measure with the top draft pick. Beasley will reportedly return to practice later this week, and will still take part in the Heat's five NBA Summer League games next Monday thru Friday in Orlando, Florida.

Walker has surgery on injured knee

Former K-Stater Bill Walker had successful surgery Wednesday on his injured right knee supervised by the Boston Celtics' team physician. Walker was drafted with the 47th pick in last week's NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, and traded to the Celtics. He was injured in a pre-draft workout last month, partially tearing the meniscus in his right knee. Early reports were that Walker was considering just rehabbing the knee, but elected to have the surgery. Walker missed Boston's rookie camp, and the timing of his resuming workouts is not known.

Earlier this week, Kansas State assistant track & field coach Tom Pappas qualified for his 3rd Olympic games in the decathlon, and 2006 NCAA mile champion Christian Smith also punched a ticket for Beijing in the 800 meter run. Several current and former Wildcats will also begin their road towards a spot on the US Olympic team Thursday night in preliminary events at the US Track & Field trials in Eugene, Oregon. Women's hammer throwers Loren Groves & Laci Heller will compete, Scott Sellers and 2007 alum Kyle Lancaster in the Men's High Jump, 1995 grad Gwen Wentland and 2007 alum Kaylene Wagner in the Women's High Jump, and 2003 grad Amy Mortimer in the Women's 1500 meter run.
