Manhattan City Commissioners listened to suggestions that would change the city’s code of ordinances in an effort to keep streets cleaner. Brad Claussen, who serves on the code appeals board, made many suggestions that would make it easier for the city to cite tenants that violate city trash ordinances.
The city has identified two potential ordinance changes that could improve the city’s ability to respond to such trash nuisances with section 16-2 and 16-16 that require trash containers to have a tight lid on at all times, and allow for immediate abatement for certain nuisances by the city.
All City Commissioners, except Loren Pepperd who was absent, were in agreement that measures need to be taken to clean up the city. Suggestions besides stricter enforcement of city ordinances included better education on the topic.
Over 1,200 nuisances are issued annually and approximately one-third of them come to the city from complaint.
