Consolidation of emergency dispatching for the five major emergency servers in Riley County was seriously considered by Riley County Law board members Monday, with five alternatives presented ranging from doing nothing to funding all through the RCPD budget or by sharing through the respective emergency services. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen admitted it may be a few years before the consolidation could be completed, due to budget considerations. Meanwhile, Riley County Emergency Management Director and County Fire Chief Pat Collins, told the board he fears that currently some emergency calls are being missed. Others speaking up in favor of consolidation were Emergency Medical Services Director Larry Couchman and Manhattan Fire Services Director Jerry Snyder. The proposal is for five additional dispatchers. The group also talked about a cost study recently conducted by Captain Hank Nelson, which shows Riley county as one of the least expensive when compared to other law enforcement agencies.
