Riley County Law Board examines cell phone usage
in Local by Cathy Dawes 0

Use of cell phones while driving has been the topic of several governmental meetings lately, and the Riley county law board made that list Monday. Law Board Chair Bruce Snead, who also serves on the Manhattan City Commission, asked for remarks from law enforcement administrators as the city commission considers an ordinance. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen says he’s maintained from the beginning, there’s already an inattentive driving ordinance that deals with such distractions as a secondary offense, which is why he prefers the primary offense suggestion. However Schoen expressed concern about an ordinance that would likely be confusing, especially if K-State, as proposed by the student senate last week, would be exempt. Board members Gail Urban and Barry Wilkerson expressed worries about enforcement, and singling out cell phones, while there are plenty of other distractions that already affect drivers.
