Area school districts “scrambling” after latest cut-back news
in Local by Cathy Dawes 0

Some school districts in the state, such as Topeka, are considering layoffs and school closures, with the most recent announcement of even more cutbacks in school funding. While not going that far, Pottawatomie county schools Superintendents Darrell Stufflebeam and Doug Conwell expressed on KMAN’s “IN Focus” Wednesday serious concerns about the impact cutbacks will have on their respective districts. Stufflebeam, who has been able to announce several recognitions recently, including the Blue Ribbon award last Friday to Rock Creek Junior Senior High school, warns those kind of things will start to be affected. Superintendent Stufflebeam adds the next set of cuts will have an extremely serious impact. Stufflebeam goes on to say questions about who will cook the food and clean the buildings will likely be heard more in times to come, with 85 percent of the school district’s budget going to people. Wamego’s USD 320 Superintendent Doug Conwell admits it’s scary right now. While Conwell says he understands why we’ve gotten to this point, that doesn’t make things any easier. Conwell goes on to tell KMAN school districts thought they were prepared… but that’s apparently not the case now. He says he’s “scrambling,” sending out memos to staff earlier this week freezing spending, until the district is able to get a handle on what this means.
