City commission gets update on downtown redevelopment
in Local by Cathy Dawes 0

By now, everyone has heard about the new downtown redevelopment. A convention center, a hotel, a conference center, a parking garage and a park are all in the works. But, not many people know about some of the infrastructure that’s going to be installed. Well, HWS Consulting’s Chuck Bartlett, gave the Manhattan City Commission an update on what’s going to be built, other than the buildings. Bartlett said one key focus was traffic. The area will feature a raised intersection as well as a stop light at the intersection of Fort Riley Boulevard and Third Street.

After Bartlett got the commission up to speed, Bowman Bowman Novick’s Lorie Doolittle-Bowman gave the commission a run down of the aesthetics of the area. She said there will be lots of trees lining the roads, wide sidewalks, urns with flowers in them, benches, two-toned brick sidewalks and even some way-finding and historic signs. After the thorough presentation, Commissioner Loren Pepperd was left in awe.

The presentation was part of a work session, so no action was taken. The commission only advised the design team on what they think should be done with the design.
